NAME: Blue Diamond
CANON: Steven Universe
POINT IN CANON: Some point before Reunited (Season 5, Episode 23-24)
AGE: SUPER OLD. Well over ten thousand years at a minimum, but likely much more than that.
APPEARANCE:
Blue Diamond is a giant, roughly 40-50 foot tall woman with blue skin and pale blue, nearly white hair. Embedded into her chest just above her sternum is the gemstone that is her true form, a blue diamond. She has sad, droopy eyes, with diamond-shaped pupils.

In posture, she’s often hunched over rather than standing straight. She also tends to favour wearing a long, sweeping navy cloak, with a hood that hides her features.

CANON PERSONALITY:
Understanding Blue Diamond as a person means first understanding Gem Society as a whole. Rigidly structured, gem society works on a strict social structure, where everyone is created for a purpose - and only that purpose - from the moment they are born. There’s no social movement, and no acceptance of being anything outside of the role you were made for. As a Diamond, Blue Diamond is at the very top of this social structure, and for thousands and thousands of years, gem propaganda has hailed the Diamonds as perfect and flawless. They are believed to be objectively better and more intelligent than all other gems, giving them the right to rule over them all. This, it turns out, is something of a double edged sword - Blue Diamond benefits from all of the privileges and benefits her rank gives her, but it also limits her social connections. With the other three Diamonds being the only ones who are her social equals, they’re the only ones she can form bonds with.

And even within the Diamonds, there’s still further restrictions of hierarchy, with strong suggestions of White Diamond being ‘first’ among diamonds, with Blue and Yellow Diamonds ranking equally below her, and Pink below them. Blue Diamond is, in effect, incredibly isolated - and has lived with that isolation for so long that she likely doesn't even realise that it’s there. She’s so far above other gems that the idea of forming social bonds with them wouldn’t even occur to them.

This isolation has had the effect of making Blue Diamond rather condescending, and dismissive. She had a kind of stern, maternal attitude towards Pink Diamond, treating her very much as an unruly child who didn’t really know how to fulfil her responsibilities properly. She regards other gems as expendable and will easily shatter those those transgress or fail in their task. And she can be extremely paternalistic towards humans and life forms she sees as inferior to gems. Humans are, from Blue Diamond’s perspective, something more in the vein of pets or endangered animals. She’s developed some respect for their ability to survive despite being so weak and fragile, but she’s still genuinely surprised when Greg is able to understand her problems and empathise with her. The idea that other creatures might also feel and understand grief seems utterly new to her. She does seem to have mellowed a little in this regard, having realised that she and Yellow were too harsh on Pink. And she’s capable of kindness. But empathy, respect, and understanding for anyone not a Diamond is something she very much lacks.

The next important thing to understand about Blue Diamond is how grief has shaped her. Pink Diamond was one of the few gems Blue Diamond could be close with. She was, in Blue Diamond’s eyes at least, something like a daughter or a much younger sibling. Blue Diamond could be stern towards her, but she cared deeply about her - and when Pink Diamond died, she was completely unable to cope. She’s effectively been stuck in the Depression stage of grief for thousands of years, and has been neglecting her job for a millennia to mourn. She’s utterly unable to let go of the past, and has become fixated on Pink’s death and legacy, hoarding anything and everything relating to Pink.

She often appears calm, speaking in a soothing, mild matter. Particularly when compared to Yellow Diamond, she’s a more graceful and demure presence, and she can in fact appear more meek in comparison. But inside, she’s emotionally unstable. Not just with grief and sadness, but with rage and anger. She’s quick to anger and, even before Pink’s death, was given to dealing out disproportionate retribution for minor infractions. She can grow hard, and cold, when she is suspicious that someone is failing at their talk or stepping outside of what she wishes. And she wants those who killed Pink not just to die, but to suffer, to pay dearly for what they did. She knows that this revenge won’t make her feel better - in fact, in only makes her feel worse - but grief and rage drives her to seek it anyway.

Within the Diamond Authority, Blue Diamond is in charge of Homeworld’s court system and oversees diplomatic gems. She likes to hear every opinion and follow a slow, lengthy due process. Even when the outcome is all but decided in advance - such as in Steven’s Trial, which Yellow Diamond regarded largely as all for show - Blue Diamond treats the process seriously. She wants to find out the truth - she knows that Pink’s death doesn’t make any sense, and she’s driven to find out why. Whether she has this same drive for less personal matters remains to be seen.

ABILITIES:
Blue Diamond is a Gem, which means that she technically doesn’t have a ‘body’ in the same sense as organic beings. Her gem in fact is her body, with the rest of her being a light projection that has physical form. If her ‘body’ is destroyed, she will revert back to her gem to reform later. She does not age, cannot die of natural causes, and in fact can only die her if her gem is shattered.

She also has greater strength, speed, and durability than organic life forms. She can create bubbles that encase objects or creature inside them - and when encased around a Gem, can prevent them from reforming. She can shapeshift, changing her form into something else - although as a Diamond, changing her shape is probably seen as something beneath her. She would also technically be able to summon a unique weapon, although this, too, seems to be something that Diamonds (so far) don’t do, probably also regarding it as something unnecessary. And lastly, all Gems are capable of fusing, a power by which they merge with another Gem to form a new being that is a combination of all the Gems in the fusion. This too, however, is an ability Blue Diamond has probably never used, with fusion between Gems of a different type being forbidden and taboo. Being a Diamond, there’s only three other Diamonds for her to fuse with, and they don’t seem inclined to do so.

As a Diamond in particular, she also possesses additional abilities and strengths. She’s more powerful and durable than other Gems, suffering little damage by being crushed by a barn and a warship. She’s also able to create energy to use as a weapon, molding light into various projectiles. When used in conjunction with other Diamonds, this light and energy can become a corrupting force that permanently alters the Gems exposed to it.

She’s also able to project an aura that makes other people feel her sadness. Non-Gems have some resistance to this, but will still be affected when her aura is powerful enough. Those exposed to Blue Diamond’s aura will find themselves uncontrollably weeping, and may in fact be completely debilitated by the grief and sadness. This aura also appears to be able to protect Blue Diamond from other telepathic influences.

There also a possibility that Blue Diamond’s aura can project emotions other than sadness - but since sadness has been her predominant emotion for thousands of years, it’s the one that she projects.

Overall, Blue Diamond is incredibly powerful - but she does not have much in the way of actual battle skill. Mostly, she just stands there and soaks up damage while using her depressive aura to put people out of action. If it weren’t for the fact that being a Diamond just makes her so much more powerful than everyone else, she would be a much easier opponent.

INVENTORY:
Nothing. Blue Diamond doesn’t really carry around things - if she does need something, her Pearl or other gems carry it for her.

ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW?
Blue Diamond is huge - like, seriously huge - but it’s something that I’d still like to play with in the game. Since gems can shapeshift there is some flexibility here, but Blue Diamond herself is probably going to regard voluntarily making herself small as something beneath her status as a Diamond. So, I’m thinking that she’ll still be her normal height in liminal space, but that the Arcana could make it so that she’s normal person sized during jaunts by default. Would that work?

M A R K S;
  • Hermit: Isolation is something the social structure of Gem Society has, inadvertently, imposed upon the Diamonds. And Blue Diamond in particular has very much been embodying some of Hermit’s idioms - solitude, quiet, retreat, reflection. Although for Blue Diamond, these are very much stemming from a negative rather than a positive place.
  • Death: Normally I’d veto Death because he’s already marked Matthew, but he’s honestly the best fit out of all the Arcana left. Blue Diamond is defined by death, and sadness, and the way that she’s utterly ruled by her grief.
  • Judgement: A bit of a stretch, admittedly, since Judgement’s idiom as written doesn’t really suit Blue Diamond (she’s not forgiving, or accepting of past mistakes, or reconciling with anyone). But she’s also very much in the same patterns that Judgement has been in during the game; wanting justice, wanting those who have wronged her to pay for what they have done. So in a pinch, Blue Diamond might be able to work, in a kind of reverse-Judgement sense.

VETO:
Sun. For obvious reasons.
